Dear Baby,

You are so sweet while you drift off to sleep. You make lots of facial expressions, like the cute smile in the photo below.

Unfortunately, you aren't giving us enough opportunities to see these smiles. Please start sleeping more during the day for your naps! It will help you to sleep more soundly at night, I promise.

First Tub Bath ...

DH has been bathed by both of his grandmothers in sinks. He's been given little bird baths (what I call wet washcloth baths!) nearly every day since birth.

Tonight was a major life experience for him - his first sudsy bath in an official baby bath tub.

I think he liked it. He squirmed at first, but really didn't make many noises. He looked pretty relaxed. I think its because he enjoys new experiences.

Afternoon Play Time

Today Daniel enjoyed looking and batting at a small pillow. He has started making non-crying noises that seem to happen during pleasurable experiences for him. So he was grunting and cooing at the pillow.

He is often a napping nurser, and I have a hard time waking him up since he is so cute and peaceful.

Three Weeks Old

Dear Baby Dan,

This week you are three weeks old. This week I've noticed that your hair is getting longer, and I can almost see your eyebrows. Your appetite is insatiable. Really, are you this hungry, or do you just like having my attention all on you? Or is it being cuddled that you like so much?

You are growing... ounce by ounce. Your pediatrician says you will gain an ounce a day, but I wonder if that takes into account how frequently you expel liquids from your body! No wonder you are hungry all the time!

You and I have had a peaceful week at home, with few visitors and few outings. I've managed to take more naps and to do a little laundry this week. Its odd for me to be at home during the day because ordinarily, I'd be beginning a school year with students this week. I don't mind the change; in fact, my body thanks you for the chance to take a quick nap, eat a morning snack, wear comfortable clothes, and go barefoot. Those aren't things I could do as a teacher!

You had some unhappy experiences at grocery stores this week. Both instances occurred during the same day, when I needed to pick up milk and recycling bags. You screamed so much in the first store that I only made it to aisle four. I didn't get milk OR recycling bags. By the time we reached our neighborhood, you were asleep in your car seat, so I ventured to a different store (for the sake of the first store's employee's ears!). You woke up just as I was trying to decide what cantaloupes to buy and screamed as I frantically searched for the Tositos we needed. In this case, I did get the milk, but neglected to get the recycle bags. Your vocal chords really are getting stronger! I felt so stressed by your red-turning-purple-face that I made a beeline for our house. I got those blue recycle bags another time, when I was alone and couldn't forget!

Next week I will try to take you out on walks more often, okay?

First Day of School...

Or first day at a school, anyway! Baby Dan spent time at his Grandma D's kindergarten classroom on Wednesday, August 12. He got a lot of attention from her co-workers and seemed to enjoy his time.
