DHH has started to say untruths. Well, lies.
As in: yes, I made my bed. Oh no wait , don't go check; I didn't.
He has started using an unintelligible goofy voice when he is ashamed and embarrassed and silly and we are asking him to make amends or apologize. Latest offense: batting away forkful of corn into the floor.
He heard that Uncle Randy sang Benny and the Jets about Benjamin. He does not know that song but heard me sing a partial lyric and so DHH spent afternoon saying, ba ba ba ba Benny in a Jet.

Daniel on the Phone
And note: the phone is usually not a phone. It can be a wooden block, a cup, a shoe, or nothing at all.
He will say something like this:
2-9-9-JK Y Text Message
(pause)
Send email a Daddy.
(pause)
Okay, call you back. Bye.

Current Daniel Phrases
He's been mentioning Baby Lisa, the missing infant, in prayers for three weeks. He says in the same breath, and Uncle Wessy. He is confused about how infant Lisa Irwin is not the same Lisa that his uncle knows.
He tells himself, careful, careful or carefully, carefully when carrying objects. We started telling him this when he'd used to hands to bring his plate to the sink after meals. He says this with other objects that he is supposed to deliver from one place to another or with things we tell him are fragile.
He asks us to wrap him up to sleep. We swaddle his sister and call that wrapping her up, but he hasn't been swaddled since 11 months old. He asks us to wrap Dee Dee up or wrap mommy up! instead of saying tuck in.
He replaces most S sounds and blends with F sounds. Feep = sleep, Feen = screen. He says the word saw correctly though, as in Dee Dee use table saw.
He has a hard time with Ps and often says M sounds. Except for Poppy. He does say the first P in poop, but always calls it Pook. His accent is a bit inconsistent!
He still calls his sister ElsieBuggy.
He surprised us this weekend by telling his aunt he wanted chocolate milk pink to drink. We were so surprised, since he insists on saying talk bow key pink for the very same drink. We had a hunch he was being stubborn, not incapable of saying the phrase!
He insists that daddy go feep in daddy's bed if Dan is puting him down for a weekend nap or to sleep at night. He doesn't say this with me.
He notices if I yawn and comments Mommy tired. He'll sometimes speculate Mommy hon-gry! He also says Mommy hot! if I change clothes or turn on a fan. He's very aware.
He picked up the phrase "run like the wind" from a book about a foal we have. He runs in the yard and says Dee Dee run a wind!
He still calls his tricycle a popSICle. Sometimes he refers to pictures of other people's bikes as popscicles, but usually by tricycles or bikes. Its his nickname for his specific bike to call it a popscicle.
He likes frozen chicken and rice and bean burritos, but he calls them toe-ri or ritos.
He calls back packs a pack mack. We have taken a backpack on a hike night once, but somehow he brings up pack macks often.
And perhaps the most fun and most annoying... Dee Dee feep naked!!!!!! After each diaper change or potty break or after bath, he dashes into his bed and pretends to sleep. He resists putting on pants. He giggles and is ridiculous for a few minutes. The idea of sleeping without pants on really thrills him, even when we suggest his sheets will be dirty if he does so. He agrees he doesn't want to sleep in a wet bed, but he will change the topic and go straight into pleading to feep naked.
Daniel often talks about his father while he's at work. He'll say Daddy home? Daddy truck home? and I'll ask when Dad will come home... After nap! Daniel will say. Often, he asks for him first after waking up. In the photos below, he was anxiously awaiting his dad to come home in early October. He was so excited he wouldn't sit still to put pants on. His dad had just arrived and he was shouting through the screen to him daddy truck hooooome! Mommy do it get the mail now!

A New Set of Vocabulary Words
Shooting
Go Hunting
Dee Dee Pow Pow Pow Shoot a Gun!
Go hunting with Poppy
Go hunting with Poppy Zekey
Go hunting with Daddy in the woods
Deer hunting
Shoot hunting
Shooting a gun
Shoot Pow Pow!
Daniel learned these tonight at dinner and tried the words out on a phone call to his Haid grandparents. Its the first time he's talked about hunting ever, and the first time in a few weeks he's talked about firearms. As he was saying these phrases excitedly and quickly in a loud voice, his father's face lit up with a smile.

Two Things You Say That Melt Our Hearts...
Daddy... home.... daddy, home!
You say this when you wake for the day and are so excited if he is in fact home because its a weekend. You also say this when its afternoon and you have woke early from a nap and are HOPING its after 3 and he is home from work.
Mama Bes-shag-e!
Boy, this is the key to my heart. When you say these words I probably would do anything for you. You say my name like this when you want to show me something and when you are being very kind to me.

Waffles, yes.
Daniel says this phrase ten times a day. He begs and begs to eat waffles, and not only at breakfast!
I used to ask him what he wanted to eat, but I've changed my tune because he only would say, "Waf-fulls!" (Or cake!)
Lately though, he's been coming to me and telling me what he wants to eat. "Waff fulls, yes!" is his request/demand. He usually gets his way one out of three meals.
We serve him waffles with almond butter and strawberry or grape jelly or with vanilla yogurt or with applesauce. On special, rare occasions he gets shee-gup, and that will be the rule until he keeps that shee-gup out of his hair!

Daddy Work.
Every morning one of the first things DHH does is figure out who is home.
He will ask, :"Daddy home?".
I say, "Daddy's at work."
He'll argue, "Daddy home. Daddy home!".
Today though, he said, "Daddy wok. More Mongey."
I guess he had asked why Daddy was at work and one of us told him it was to earn money for our family. He remembered! It was really cute.

The Shaaack Doo
Wow, does he ever like his step stools. These things appear all over our house, moved around all day from their original position. He always knows where he put them last, well... after he thinks about it (Hum, hm, arms crossed).
These little gems help DHH climb onto anything, reach most surfaces, and really get some extra fun out of our house.
He loves to say step stool, too. Shuck Doo or Shaaack Dooo are their names.
I think for the next one year old birthday event I attend, I will buy a Shack Doo for the child.

Naming Nanny's Cat
Daniel, your Douglas grandparents just acquired a kitten. It was dropped off near their house and wants to live with them. Nanny told you about it on the phone the other day, and today you couldn't stop talking about it. You named the cat :Mee Ow Haid. You said the cat's name was Haid, like your name (you say it like this: head).
This is the first object you've named as a name. You call other things by nick names, like binky, blankie, tiny (the small potty) and things by their real names, like Ernie, Boppy, and blue potty. This is your first original name idea.

DDD for Tuesday, November 16
Daniel loves muffins! He helped me make this batch of muffins, too.
He poured in the ingredients I had pre-measured and stirred them. He
also put the cupcake papers in the muffin tin. He did NOT like
waiting for them to bake, but turning the light on the oven seemed to
help him relax! When they cooled, he ate four of them. He REALLY
likes muffins!
He is also saying, "HOT!". He really is good at warning me about the temperature of our oven and other hot things.

DDD for November 13, 2010
Daniel likes to put things on his hiands these days. He shouts, "ON!"
and "OFF!" during this process.

Another New Word! OFF
Daniel has mastered the word off in less than 24 hours!!
He and his dad have been practicing the F sound as in Flag (his favorite word, we think) for a week. Last night I was telling him to take off his socks. He said off in a strange accent. But today, I placed him on a step stool near my closet light switch so he could turn it off and on. What a hit that was with him! He kept saying in a quiet voice OFFFFF OFFFFFF. We went to turn all the lights off in the house, and he said OFFFF each time.

New Word: Moon
Daniel and his dad have been reading Good Night, Moon as a bed time book since he was an infant, off and on. Its an "on" month now, and they point to all the things in the great, green room. He especially likes the clock and the phone.
The other day I noticed Daniel was pointing up in the sky and yelling, "Noon!" He had noticed the moon and told me about it every time we were outside. It was out again in the morning yesterday, and he told me about the "noon" or the "nnnnooon" again.
Usually he says the first sounds of a word, but in this case, he is saying the last sounds of the word, which is interesting. The only other word he does that with is banana (nana).

Milestones: Words!
Today at breakfast Daniel told me he wanted a banana. He pointed and said "Ban-nana". I fed it to him bite by bite on a spoon that he used to serve himself. When he needed more, he said, "nana' and pointed to the banana. He also had some graham crackers and milk, but he ate the WHOLE banana. When I started to feed him some more food, he said, "All done". Really... those words! They were a little garbled, but I understood them because of the baby sign motion he did, too.
How neat!
