This Is Greta, Your Second Cousin

She wanted to hold you, but you wiggled so much that it was difficult for you to sit on her lap, so I helped.

Her grandma is Carla, who is my aunt and your Nana's twin sister. Her dad is Jef, who is my first cousin. She also lives in Columbia with her brother Eli and her parents.

Yummy Toes!

Yummy Toes is one of Daniel's favorite games. He is so flexible that it is not difficult for us to stretch his feet to his face. We tickle his cheeks with his toes and say, "Yummy Toes!!". This makes him laugh. Sometimes he smiles and tries to eat his toes. This makes us laugh.

Sharing Affection

Daniel, you have been so affectionate to me lately.

I appreciate when you make eye contact with me and smile.
It makes me feel good to know you are appreciating me and recognizing me.
Its okay that you often pull my hair or poke my eyes if its okay that I often wipe off excess slobber from you super wet kisses.

Love,
Mama Bethany

Baby's First Thanksgiving

Uncle Wesley held Daniel on Thursday night after the evening meal and asked him how he enjoyed his first Thanksgiving.

If he could talk (in standard American English, not Baby Jabber), I imagine Daniel would have said this:

"I liked the attention from family members I received.  There were so many smiling faces who talked to me and wanted to hold me.  Thanks for the cuddles.  I also liked smelling the different food smells, and I look forward to trying some of the mashed potatoes next year.  I wish that I didn't have to take a nap during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, because I think I would have enjoyed that!  Maybe we can go see it in real life sometime?  I also want to say that I am thankful for the comfortable life I am leading right now.  I am so well taken care of, and I know that there are some babies who do not experience as much love or affection as I do.  So Uncle Wes, thanks for asking!  How was your twenty fifth Thanksgiving?"

Meeting Aunt Ann

Our good friend Ann Hoemann came for a quick visit during Thanksgiving week. We were lucky to have her stay a night at our house because she has so many friends and family to see in Missouri. The last few times I've gotten to spend time with her, I was pregnant with Daniel, so this is her first opportunity to meet her!

Daniel took to her instantly, allowing her to play with him and shower attention his way. He enjoyed snuggling on her lap as I prepared dinner and relished in the attention of another adult.

It is my hope that Daniel will be close friends with the children of our close friends, especially John and Ann's. I cannot decide if I would rather him marry one of their children or be college roommates. I suppose it depends on the gender of the children and their ages! I think that we will enjoy watching them play together so much.

Such a Patient Baby!

Yesterday, Daniel accompanied me and my friend Ann on what became an all day shopping bonanza. We left the house at 9 AM and returned after 3 PM. This is a long outing for him!

He waited patiently in the car with Ann as I did errands downtown. He waited patiently at Old Navy in an extra large dressing room as Ann tried on dozens of pants. He patiently accepted a meal in the same dressing room. He was patient as we parked the car in a crowded mall parking lot, and just as patient as we ate our lunch in Panera. He was patient during a trip to two more stores that lasted three hours! He patiently accepted nap time in his stroller instead of in his cozy crib.

He was a sweet, patient boy during this much-needed girls' shopping trip, which made me feel very lucky to have a cooperative child.

Dislikes: Showers

Daniel loves baths... ones in his tiny tub, in grandmothers' sinks, and in the full sized tubs.  I thought he might like showers, too.  Boy, was I wrong!

At four months, showers might be his Most Hated Thing.  I needed to shower, and since Dan was away, I thought I would try out Daniel in the shower, using his Bumbo chair for sitting.  Once the shower water was turned on, he began crying. screaming.

Screaming as if he were never more terrified or angry in his life!    I quickly picked him up to cuddle him, which worked.  He was comforted.  I a few moments later, I put him back in the Bumbo.  Again, screaming ensued! I rinsed the shampoo out of my hair and decided to cut my losses.

We went back in to his cozy room for some loitioning and reading time.  He smiled and was back to his usual cheerful self.

Hands in Mouth!

Hello Lovely Baby! You are learning about your mouth these days by putting your hands in your mouth. Sometimes it seems like you've got your entire fist in there! Other times, you prefer just the tips of two fingers. The infant research says you are exploring your mouth and this "mouthing" will allow you to learn how you can talk and increase your self-awareness. I make sure to was your hands and trim your nails so you are putting clean digits in that sweet cherry mouth. Love you.

Reaching!

Baby Daniel is now reaching with intent. This is a developmental milestone that is coming a bit early for him. The parent educator for Parents as Teachers was very surprised that he could see an object and then reach for it. He has been doing this for about two weeks, and I think his activity mat/gym has really helped him. He wants to hold or touch everything, and once he has grabbed something, he usually tries to put it in his mouth.

I was trying to take some cute pictures with these blocks, but he kept knocking them over as he reached for them. He was further frustrated by the fact that they weren't so grippable and kept falling out of his grasp!

Wake Up Routine

Daniel usually wakes up for an early morning feeding. For example, he awoke hungry at 5:30 AM. When I put him back down, he is drowsy or sleeping. This means I crawl back into bed and snuggle until Dan's alarm sounds at 6:30 AM. Dan will get out of bed, often without a snooze push!, and go for a shower. He will usually check kon Daniel, occasionally putting him in the swing while he eats breakfast at 7:00 AM. Sometimes Daniel and I join Dan on the couch watching Good Morning, America!, but lately, I've been able to sleep until 8 AM while Daniel sleeps until 8:30 AM or so. I will wash my face and brush my teeth, then check my email. Daniel stays in his jammies until after his breakfast, and hen we clean his face and diaper area. Sometimes we sing or read books while I am deciding on what outfit he should wear. Usually, we are ready for the day around 9 AM, and Daniel takes his morning nap around 9:45 AM or so.

I am thankful we don't have to rush around to get ready for daycare, and that I can enjoy how alert and happy he is in the morning.

How We Roll...

Well, how we get around these days, anyway.
Sure, the stroller is great for a long walk, but its not so great for grocery shopping or quick errands.
Daniel often sits in this pouch sling from Peanut Shell that has a decidedly momma-friendly print.

Dear 13 Week Old Daniel,

Hello my little baby friend,

In your thirteenth week, it is the last week of October.  You spent the first part of the week visiting my family in St. James.  We headed down to visit them after attending the MU Homecoming parade and a college alumni reunion for my former academic department. You were a hit at that party, and you even won a door prize!  My former boss and professors really enjoyed holding you and seeing your fasionable outfit.

That Saturday night my parents took our little family out to a tasty BBQ restaurant in Cuba, Missouri.  I wore you in a wrap style carrier, because it was time for you to take a short evening nap.  An older lady came up to us and touched your head.  I thought it was odd.  She said, "Oh! I thought the baby was a doll.  I haven't ever seen someone carry a baby like that before."  I thought that was kind of weird.  I am definitely not the type of crazy woman to carry around a doll.  Oh well!  You made her smile!  I was so excited for some good BBQ, but you had other plans for my dinner.  You squirmed and required more attention.  I walked around outside with you to calm you down and even tried to feed you.  You were just too distracted to eat anything or settle into a nap.  I had to take my food home in a take out box.

On the half hour car ride back home, you spent the last twenty minutes as a fussy baby. We discovered that you enjoyed hearing us sing to you.  My dad started to sing the song Miss Lucy Had a Baby.  My mom and I joined in, but your dad just laughed at the silly rhyme along with you!  Here are the lyrics to this little song:

Miss Lucy had a baby, she named him Tiny Tim

She put him in the bathtub to see if he could swim!
He drank up all the water, he ate up all the soap
He tried to eat the bathtub, but it wouldn't go down his throat!

Miss Lucy called the doctor,
Miss Lucy called the nurse,
Miss Lucy called the lady with the alligator purse.

In came the doctor, in came the nurse

In came the lady with the alligator purse.

"Measles" said the doctor,
"Mumps" said the nurse,
"Pizza" said the lady with the alligator purse.

Out went the doctor, out with the nures,
Out went the lady with the baby in her purse!

(This silly rhyme is something my dad used to sing to us when we were little kids.  I think we probably skipped rope to it.)

On Sunday, we celebrated Aunt Rachie's 24th birthday.  She thought she was old!  She brought her boyfriend, and your Aunt Jessica brought her husband and step daughter.  We ate a delicous birthday cake, but of course, you only had milk.  All the party guests left in the afternoon, and we took a little nap.  Your dad left to go home, but we stayed for three additional days.

You were a bit fussy all week because you ran a low-grade fever.  You required exra sleep, extra cuddles, and some infant Tylenol.

Each morning, you would wake up around 5:30 AM, ready for your first meal.  This meant you were able to be awake and friendly when you visited your grandparents before work.  They enjoyed seeing you so early in the morning, but they did have to dodge your spit ups!  You started to have spit ups that resembled small fountains. Not cute or sweet at all!

While my parents were at work, we relaxed!  You napped quite well, and I caught up on watching cable TV.  They have an extra large TV, and I think that you enjoyed seeing the colors and lights on the screen much more than on our small screen TV!  We also did cloth diapering on this trip away from home, which meant you required more laundry.  That's okay.  I feel very strongly about reducing our garbage, and I am happy to spend the extra time and effort to make less trash.

I really had wanted to take you out on walks, but it rained all week.  I wasn't able to show you the beautiful trees in the city park or take you to the public library.  Both activities will be even more fun for you next year, I am sure.

When my parents came home, you gave them all kinds of smiles and gurgles.  Your even started to reach for and touch their faces!  So far you'd only done that to me and your dad.  You smiled especially big to your Nana, who gave you lots of attention and love.  She played your new trick, which I call the Kissy Game.  You start to squeal whenever someone leans over your face, and you get very excited to be kissed.  Then you open up your mouth wide in an excited smile, and wait for someone to put their face on your lips so you can kiss them.  Its a very wet, very sweet little game.  You played this game with Nana for a long time on Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday afternoon, we had lunch with your Great Grandma Cooley and your Aunt Rachie.  We met them at our favorite Chinese food restaurant, and you weren't too whiny during that time.  Aunt Rachie gave you lots of sqeezes, and like you always do after she hugs you, you smelled like her flowery perfume!  Before lunch, we went over to GGMa Cooley's work.  She is the cook for a fraternity house.  She prepares lunches and suppers for university students who are studying to be engineers.  She has done this job since my mom was a little girl.  She enjoys being around the young guys and really wanted to show you off to them.  You looked around the fraternity dining hall with curiousity.

When we came back to Columbia, your dad was very excited to see you.  He always says and does the nicest things for us when we get back from a little trip.  It was good to be back and to cuddle on the couch together as a little family.

We had to unpack and get ready for Halloween!  You had two costumes - a jackolatern and a soybean.  I bought both of them a few months before you were born.  I had no idea how big you would be, and I imagined that the pumpkin costume would be much too big.  Instead, you filled that costume out!  It was the perfect size.  Your little soybean costume (probably intended to be a sweet pea) was actually loose and large, like a sleeping bag.  You wore the soybean costume to a Halloween carnival at our church.  You fell asleep in your dad's arms and it was oh-so-cute.  You made a great vegetable!  Halloween night was less eventul.  You slept in your swing during the early evening.  We had a handful of trick or treaters, but the only one who came to visit you was Taylor Dorr.  She dressed as a red M&M, and we took your photo.  She loved your costume!

By the end of the week, your fever had subsided and you were back to "normal" - eating the same amounts, reguarly filling your diapers, and chattering away.  A few nights you slept much better with only one middle of the night feeding.  Even though I dislike getting up and walking across the house to tend to you at 1 AM, 3 AM, and 4 AM, you sure do look cute in your jammies.  I know its my responsibility to comfort and care for you.  Its a big adjustment to sleep in your room by yourself, and I know one day you'll not need me in the middle of the night.  So I try my best to be patient and to be perky for you during the days after a particularly sleepless night.

I love you sweet boy.  Happy 13th week birthday!

Love
Mama Bethany

Daniel's First Grass Sit

November 11, 2009, downtown Columbia, during an Veterans' Day parade.

He held a few leaves and felt the grass.
He looked around with interest and prefered to sit on the grass, rather than stand.

Sleep Training

I read a lot of books about infant care, philosophy of baby sleep, and advice books for parents. They have been so helpful and making Daniel more comfortable and happy, which in turn, has made his parents more comfortable and happy.

Since he is nearly four months old, its about time for him to begin the process of un-swaddling to sleep. Yesterday I let him fall alseep on his own in the crib. It only took ten minutes or so. When I peeked in, he was laying with arms outstreched and feet tucked in. Very cute.

But, he only slept thirty minutes.

Usually, morning naps are at least an hour, sometimes two! Usually morning naps are swaddled naps.

So today, I swaddled him and let him fall asleep on his own. He fell asleep within five minutes, and is still sleeping one hour later.

He sleeps so much better tucked up and cozy. I wonder if I am going to need to swaddle him for the next sixteen years!
