DDD October 29

Love the warm weather in late October!

Pedaling

We've been trying to do pedaling with Daniel on his trike and this pedal tractor since July.  He refused to do it until just this week, and then he is coerced into doing it. I think he isn't quite strong enough in his knees to really pump the pedals and he gets frustrated.  I think he quits because its too challenging and he doesn't see the benefit of pedaling as apposed to walking with the trike.  He has grown a few inches and gained two pounds since July, so it makes sense that its getting slightly easier and he's becoming more confident riding these days. I bet we will have a pedaler soon!

Counting

Daniel can recite the numbers to fifteen consistently, and often he can count to twenty.  I don't think its actual one to one correspondence between object and number once he is past five or six., but I could be wrong.  For instance, we were washing some potatoes on Friday and he counted them correctly twice, but other times he came up with 12 and 15, when it was really 13.  During this particular counting time, he initiated the counting as he washed potatoes and transfered them between bowls.  He called a nine a five once, and when I corrected he did it correctly the next time.

Its so neat witnessing his learning grow. We've invested a lot of time and resources into his brain and now its bearing fruit!  He is able to show us his ideas.

Holding Hands

This morning I held hands with my son as he sat on my lap on the
couch. I tried to appreciate the size and relative smallness of his
hands, as well as their stillness. He was rubbing my hands, and it
was just so special. Usually this is the time that I determine if he
needs a nail clipping or a hand washing, but for today I just enjoyed
the company of his warm, malleable hand.

DDD October 28, 2011

Daniel turned 27 months old yesterday! His vocabulary and thinking
skills amaze me every day. He was certainly learning and absorbing
from birth until age 20 months when he really started talking! He
talks all day about everything, and he even talks in his sleep!

More Sister Love Evidence!

Daniel really IS affectionate with his sister.  He barely gives her a moment's peace! The children are getting to large to fit in the small tub together, but that doesn't mean they have distinct bath times... they kind of mesh together.  I am happy to see they love each other so much!

Current Daniel Phrases

He's been mentioning Baby Lisa, the missing infant, in prayers for three weeks.  He says in the same breath, and Uncle Wessy.  He is confused about how infant Lisa Irwin is not the same Lisa that his uncle knows.

He tells himself, careful, careful or carefully, carefully when carrying objects.  We started telling him this when he'd used to hands to bring his plate to the sink after meals.  He says this with other objects that he is supposed to deliver from one place to another or with things we tell him are fragile.

He asks us to wrap him up to sleep.  We swaddle his sister and call that wrapping her up, but he hasn't been swaddled since 11 months old.  He asks us to wrap Dee Dee up or wrap mommy up! instead of saying tuck in.

He replaces most S sounds and blends with F sounds.  Feep = sleep, Feen = screen.  He says the word saw correctly though, as in Dee Dee use table saw.

He has a hard time with Ps and often says M sounds.  Except for Poppy. He does say the first P in poop, but always calls it Pook.  His accent is a bit inconsistent!

He still calls his sister ElsieBuggy.

He surprised us this weekend by telling his aunt he wanted chocolate milk pink to drink.  We were so surprised, since he insists on saying talk bow key pink for the very same drink.  We had a hunch he was being stubborn, not incapable of saying the phrase!

He insists that daddy go feep in daddy's bed if Dan is puting him down for a weekend nap or to sleep at night.  He doesn't say this with me.

He notices if I yawn and comments Mommy tired.  He'll sometimes speculate Mommy hon-gry! He also says  Mommy hot! if I change clothes or turn on a fan.  He's very aware.

He picked up the phrase "run like the wind" from a book about a foal we have.  He runs in the yard and says Dee Dee run a wind!

He still calls his tricycle a popSICle. Sometimes he refers to pictures of other people's bikes as popscicles, but usually by tricycles or bikes.  Its his nickname for his specific bike to call it a popscicle.

He likes frozen chicken and rice and bean burritos, but he calls them toe-ri or ritos.

He calls back packs a pack mack.  We have taken a backpack on a hike night once, but somehow he brings up pack macks often.

And perhaps the most fun and most annoying... Dee Dee feep naked!!!!!!  After each diaper change or potty break or after bath, he dashes into his bed and pretends to sleep.  He resists putting on pants.  He giggles and is ridiculous for a few minutes.  The idea of sleeping without pants on really thrills him, even when we suggest his sheets will be dirty if he does so.  He agrees he doesn't want to sleep in a wet bed, but he will change the topic and go straight into pleading to feep naked.

Daniel often talks about his father while he's at work.  He'll say Daddy home? Daddy truck home? and I'll ask when Dad will come home... After nap! Daniel will say.  Often, he asks for him first after waking up.  In the photos below, he was anxiously awaiting his dad to come home in early October.  He was so excited he wouldn't sit still to put pants on.  His dad had just arrived and he was shouting through the screen to him daddy truck hooooome! Mommy do it get the mail now!

Spotlight Stealer and Cat Dolls

He has to jump in to most things concerning his sister.  She doesn't like him in her business, obviously,

The cats in the photos are giftrs from our friend Ann, and he sleeps with at least one each night.  They are both named Mow Heady, but the blue one is new and is sometimes called Blue Mow Heady.  He's had the white doll for nearly a year and still loves it!

Cuddling with Sister.

A daily occurence in our home!  Daniel loves to have Elsa lay in his bed and probably wishes he could crawl up into her crib.  They laugh and play and enoy each other's company.

DDD and EE for October 25

Quiet morning on the couch. I think Daniel was thinking. "Shush,
noisy Elsie! My show is on!" Elsa was cooing and very excited by the
cracker he was eating!

a picture for you

This is a funny little face we haven't seen before. Daniel did have a
new and unpleasant experience this morning... he threw up for the
first time that he can remember... its been nearly a year since any
type of experience like this for him. Don't worry though - he's not
really sick. He just drank half a bottle of strawberry syrup straight
from the bottle and suffered the consequences of his bold choice!
(For the record, I was attending to Elsa and he has just mastered
opening the fridge door by himself!)

Daily Dose of Daniel for October 23, 2011

Daniel played with this four wheeler toy through a wedding reception
on Saturday. He told me that the guy on the toy was Poppy, my dad and
that he wanted to him to do a lot of tricks the next time we went to
his house. Better get to work on those tricks, Poppy.

DDD for Saturday, October 22

Daniel's Poppy came to visit on Saturday and was met by a big sqeeze
from the little guy.

DDD October 20

He was concentrating very hard on putting Play Dough into an orange
juicer and didn't even notice the photo being taken. He looks older
with shaggier hair, but has refused a hair cut for the last several
weeks.

Elsa Everyday October 20

She's been in such a sweet temperment lately and really seems to be
thriving with face to face contact.

Dr. Jekel; Mr. Haid.

Son, you were the on the best behavior of your best behavior ever this morning. You were on you A Game at the library, singing songs, participating, learning.  You were clever and sweet at my doctor's appointment.  You were funny and curious and demure when we played on the MU campus.    You were also the worst of  the worst from 1 PM to 4 PM today.  Major fits.  Major dirty diapers.  Major issues in defiance.  Major meltdowns.  Obviously, no nap happened.  It was a very tough time for you and I do take pity on what it must be like to experience such highs and lows in only a few hours span.  You must be clean wore out!  I know that I am still recovering from nearly losing my ever-loving mind during your stint on the naughty bench.  Since your behavior is so variable through the day, I am eagerly waiting for the next fun time we'll have, which should happen again soon.

Quick Love Letter To My Sleeping Child

Dear Daniel, you are loved so much.  I just went to tuck you in again during the middle of the night, and I couldn't help myself but to bend over and kiss your still little face.  Your binky is firmly held in your mouth, your body is relaxed, and the covers are tossed about on the bed.  You look to be dreaming, and as active of a sleeper as you are, I think your dream must be about an adventure.  You look peaceful, but also ready to wake at any moment and start playing with reckless abandon.  You are so lovely, darling Daniel, and I appreciate seeing you sleeping and so still so I can soak in your perfect, handsome features.  I almost want to wake you up to scoop you into a bear hug, or perhaps cuddle in close in your tiny toddler bed because I miss the physical contact we had during the first year of your life, when you were smaller and not yet mobile.  I love you so, my son, and I want you to always know this.   I count you among my blessings when I pray each night.

love,
your mama

Helping Make Baby Shood

Daniel really likes this food mill, as well as the process of making baby food for his sister.  Here are some photos of the first time he helped make her some applesauce.  Since these photos were taken, he's helped prepare what he calls "baby peas", "cereal", carrots, squash, sweet potatoes, and peaches.  Nearly every day he wants to make baby food with me, but often he is satisfied by just assembling the food mill and pretending to make some.  He gets pretty excited when she eats some of the food he's made for her, too.

This is my favorite shot.  He still shows some of of the soft and calm that have all but disappeared from babyhood.

A Little Sibling Rivalry

In the last week, I've noticed Daniel starting to get jealous of Elsie attention.  She is needy about 6 PM, with feedings, diaper change, bath, bedtime, and cuddles.  If both parents are attending to her or the parent doing housework isn't paying attention to Daniel, we can expect some misbehavior. He acts out in anyway to get attention, even negative attention.  Usually this is taking a toy or object and yelling, "MINE!" but it could also be banging on a door repeatedly and not following directions.

Tonight at dinner Daniel said he was feeling sad, and we asked why.  He said, "No Elsie."  He agreed when we asked if he was upset she was there and wanted her to leave for a little while.  He responded really well to a calm talk about feelings and sharing that his father gave, and was in a better mood and seemed to enjoy watching her eat dinner.

A New Set of Vocabulary Words

Shooting
Go Hunting
Dee Dee Pow Pow Pow Shoot a Gun!
Go hunting with Poppy
Go hunting with Poppy Zekey
Go hunting with Daddy in the woods
Deer hunting
Shoot hunting
Shooting a gun
Shoot Pow Pow!

Daniel learned these tonight at dinner and tried the words out on a phone call to his Haid grandparents.  Its the first time he's talked about hunting ever, and the first time in a few weeks he's talked about firearms.  As he was saying these phrases excitedly and quickly in a loud voice, his father's face lit up with a smile.

DDD for October 19. 2011

Last night after dinner, Dan and Daniel went outside to harvest the
rest of the tomatoes before the frost. He needed a hat, and I found
the matching mittens. He thought they were so funny! He came to the
mirror to check out his look.

Rock Throwing

Throwing rocks into a creek/pond/puddle is one of Daniel's favorite activities these days.  If he sees a body of water, his little hands begin searing for a rock to throw.  He and his dad do this together often, especially on hike nights. Here are some photos I took at RB State Park, just off Spring Brook Trail.
