Hello my 24 Week Old!
You are five months old. It is the perfect age! You have predictable reactions to situations. I know how to predict what the situations will be, too, since you lead a pretty easy life.
You wake up around 6 AM on the days I teach at the University. I feed you, and then your dad gets you dressed and ready to go to the baby sitter's home. You take a nap around 9 for an hour and a half, then you eat again. I pick you up and/or we play until afternoon nap time, which is around 1 PM. You will sleep until about 3 PM, then you eat and we wait for your dad to come home around 4 PM. He plays with you and you enjoy time with your toys while we eat dinner. Your dad bathes you and gets you tucked in for bed by 7 PM, and you sleep until 10 PM, when you take your last meal for the day. You wake about once a night for a feed or for a cuddle.

Our first regularly scheduled separation occurred this week as you began to attend a daycare at the S house. Rebbecca S and Kevin S are our friends that we know from work and softball. They have many sweet children and care for a few other toddlers and your friend Taylor, too. It was very difficult for me to leave you on the first day, even though I knew you'd be well cared for and you'd enjoy the children. I felt sad and unusual as I pulled away from their house. I think I will always remember that feeling and also how pretty the :morning was. We are not ordinarily out of the house at 7:30 AM. It was so pleasant to see the sun rise soft and pink over the snow covered landscape.

You have started to make a lot of vocalizations, many of which sound like singing. Some do not, however, sound like singing. They are more like sound effects! You say almost every consonant sound except for D, Z, V, W, and L. You have mastered the vowels and some screeching noises! Sometimes it sounds like you are mimicking our conversations with the lilt of your voice and other times it sounds like you are saying a phrase with as many syllables as "I love you", but that is probably because you hear that phrase many times each day.

You have started to put EVERYTHING in your mouth. Your feet, toys, clothing, fingers, couch cushions... everything. This means I am using a lot of Clorox cleaning wipes on your toys! You still spit up quite a lot, so I have to wash your toys and clothes quite often. You also take a pacifier at any time during the day. You enjoy chewing on them as much as sucking them. You can also find a pacifier in your crib in the dark and insert it. We think this makes you very clever!

Have you in our lives for five months has been better than we imagined. Yes, it is a platitude, but really it is true! I did not know we could enjoy another human being as much as you. We really love each other, but perhaps our love for you is a teeny bit more because you are half of each of us and you are a new thing in our world to discover each day.
Love you so much,
Your Mama.
